Girls' High School Students donate to StarLight
Palmerston North Girls’ High School
StarLight was delighted to receive an email from 2019 head girl Maddison McQueen Davies of Palmerston North Girls’ High. Maddison explained the Student Council were organising a mufti day to raise funds for StarLight. This was excellent news on two counts. Firstly the money raised will be great for StarLight to buy items needed for the amenity packs we give to Ward 21, for gifts for children under the care of CAFS, and for young people undergoing cancer treatment in Palmerston North Hospital. Secondly many high school students are concerned about mental health issues. They may know of someone who is self-harming or has taken their own life. They may themselves suffer from anxiety or depression. It is empowering for students to know that they are able to make a positive impact in the lives of those suffering mental illness. This is the second year PNGHS have raised money for StarLight, and it is very much appreciated.
Awatapu College
StarLight loves to involve kids in helping kids. Teenagers in particular are often very worried about things like self-harm or suicide amongst their peer group. Helping StarLight enables the students to do something positive to help young people experiencing mental illness. We also hope that learning about the help available will make the students more likely to ask for help themselves if they need it.
The Student Council at Awatapu College agreed to help StarLight. The students raised the funds required and filled six bags full of awesome gifts. Because the gifts were chosen for teenagers by teenagers, they were more likely to be suitable than those an adult might choose.
